GradShare 360 - Back to School...Movies
In honor of the yet another school year beginning, I have a link to share with all the current and former students out there -- it's a top 25 list of the best movies about school from Rotten Tomatoes. You may see some familiar films on the list, while other movies that made the list will come as a surprise. One thing that holds true about the list is that there aren't any movies about grad school. I guess we'll have to wait for Jorge Cham's movie in order to see the first school movie that revolves around post-graduate education. Let's check out some grad school news:
- Since we've touched on a back to school theme already, let's take a look at the top ten back-to-school beatitudes for graduate students.
- If you want to be a good student, you'll need to be a good researcher, and if you want to be a good researcher...you should try teaching.
- If the aforementioned is indeed true, then these women must have been excellent researchers; here is an interesting list of the first female professors in history.
- Male or female, finance professors in general suggest it's a good idea to attend grad school, especially for tomorrow's entrepreneurs.

GradShare 360 - Ready.Set.Go!
The beginning of the new semester brings both anxiety and excitement, especially for those of you starting grad school. I have a few blogs and articles that you may find insightful as you embark on your grad school journey. First is an excerpt from a great article brought to us by Persephone Magazine -- Dear New Graduate Students:
Welcome! I hope you're settling in OK. Whether you're sharing an office with a whole gaggle of fellow grad students, or you're living in the lap of luxury, AKA a quiet place to call your own, get settled down. Put up some pictures. Get your chair angled just right. Find the best coffee place and if they give you a discount for bringing in your own mug, make ample use of it. You're in it for the long haul and you'll need the caffeine (and cash). Read the entire article here.
For some students, grad school began earlier this summer. Check out this blog from grad student Amy Sellers, who reminds us that an early start can at times mean early stress. Starting Grad School With a Bang...Or a Shot to the Face:
So, the big story...4 days after I attended my first class I received a phone call from my academic advisor telling me that she does not see a statistics course on my undergrad transcripts. Read the rest of the blog.
Here is another post from the blog Practicing Empathy. Kate shares some of her thoughts on getting ready for grad school to start, and how she can better manage her work/life balance during her grad school adventure, Making SMARTER Goals Starting Grad School:
I start school in just over a month, hurrah! I'm really nervous about it, because I think that work-life balance is really illusive. I want Tim and Sylvie and I to have time for ourselves, each other, our jobs, and not live in squalor, and I wonder if that is too much to ask. Read more here.

GradShare 360 - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley died 34 years ago today, but clearly his legend lives on -- even in academia. At the University of Iowa, professor Peter Nazareth teaches a course entitled Elvis as Anthology. "At the core of the class is the professor's theory of Elvis as a kind of musical sponge," and apparently Elvis's influence knows no bounds; Professor Nazareth is a native Ugandan yet still was impacted by Elvis's musical career as early as 1957. Let's check out some grad school news:
- Don't believe the hype; check out the 10 biggest lies about business school.
- Once you separate fact from fiction, then you'll need some advice on how to get into the business school of your dreams.
