What open-source or free software do you find useful for dissertation writing?
This is really helkpful Avi. I've been using Word so knowing that there are others out there is great. I'm wondering if you have a favorite for creating figures? I'd throw Diigo in as a great place for taking notes around web content. More on Diigo here: http://www.diigo.com
Should I be a reviewer for conferences and journals? If yes, how much time should I spend?
Yes! Definitely, you should review. This is important as you get to see how things actually work in the publishing and reviewing process and you can form important relationships with the editorial staff that can lead to important things like participating on the Editorial Board. Reviewing is also just part of the game of being an academic. Time is a key issue and a good rule that I've been told is not to do more than about four reviews per year as a doctoral student. When you become a faculty member you can bump that number up but you?ll still have to reject some (don?t feel bad about rejecting ? you?ll need to, especially if your reviews are good).
