Having trouble with undergraduate research, and the route to take to impress grad schools. Explanations below:

Specific details: I am trying to conduct a research project on my own, but am having extreme difficulty finding help or support. The problem now is I can't do the preferred research topic because I can't conduct it without official support. So I am wondering should I still conduct my research with a significantly less interesting topic, or take this volunteer research position with a local animal group, or both? Thanks!
