Are there PhD students out there studying without funding, willing to talk about their financial situation?

Specific details: I am hesitant to begin my PhD program in the Fall because I did not receive funding. There is no doubt in my mind that I want to go to this program, but supporting myself off loans for a year, do I have to worry about being unable to receive loans for my latter years in my program?
